The boy just finished reading a story in school that took place during the depression. For those who don't know it, this boy child of mine has a flare for history. His Granddad got him interested in the depression via old movies like Grapes of Wrath and Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times, and also stories from his own life. Vernon was born the same week of the stock market crash of 1929.
So anyway, we were talking about the depression a few nights ago and did a quick google search a few minutes before bed. I found a good time line of events for us to talk about and learned something new.
I had no idea that in 1933, during Roosevelt's First 100 days in office, there was a quasi-attempt at overthrowing the government by the wealthy corporations of that time, namely Du Pont and J.P. Morgon, and replace it with a fascist regime. They supposedly had a plan for 500,000 troops to assist with this but the plan was thwarted by the General Smedley Butler who outed their plan to congress and the public.
I did a quick search today to find out more baout and found this site which has short detail of the event. I find it all quite interesting.
