Does anyone think I am crazy for potentially planning a vacation next summer to New York City with 4 kids (ages 16, 14, 10, and 1 1/2)?
Some advice would be helpful here.

Whenever I go on vacation to the Big Apple, I keep my plans loose with just 1 or 2 planned activities a day. For instance, last time I went I knew I wanted to go to the Met, see a certain play, visit a certain store, hear some great jazz, and see some old friends. I stayed 5 days in a sublet in Chelsea, and let luck take its course. Got my theater tickets at the box office for the same day and ended up with front row balcony seats at half off. Walking around town found a jazz club and noted the singer that night was someone I was dying to see, so went back that night. Mondays museums are closed, so left my visit to the Met when I could meet my friends. I always have a great, relaxing, fun time and always find a cab! Why? Because I go around Columbus Day when a lot of people are out of town for the long weekend and you can get around pretty easy and the weather is great. I guess my point is, make a list of things you want to do and see and then keep yourself open as to when you do them -that way, no stress, plenty of room to do the spontaneous. Have fun!
What do you want to accomplish? To Blondetown's point, keep your plans loose because (a) fun things reveal themselves, though not on your schedule, and (b) it always takes longer to get places than you think it should. If you need specific advice, drop me a line.
I am pretty good with keeping things loose, but my number #1 concern is getting the babe around. We certainly cannot lug a carseat around, so that rules out cabs no? I am missing something obvious? Is it easy enough to just take the subway, bus or walk pretty much everywhere? And what about from the airport to the hotel?
Once you're in NYC, you can take public transportation anywhere. To/From the airport is a bit more difficult. There IS public transportation, but it's a pain. From JFK or Newark is easier than from LaGuardia. Let me know when you're coming, and I will try to rustle up a car seat or anything else you need.

Yes, I think you're insane. But if you do it, look me up.
