I have been paying extra careful attention to what comes into our home over the last week, and tallying up our most egregious uses of plastic.
Thus far, I think they are:
- single serving yogurt containers
- take out containers
- plastic bags for bread and tortillas
- personal care products and peanut butter jars (although these at least are #1 & #2 and recyclable locally)
The one that struck me as the easiest, or perhaps most fulfilling, to make a good change over was the bread bags. I am ashamed to say that until today, I had never cooked a loaf of bread from scratch. I know I come off as all overly pious and all, but I am hardly your susie homemaker type.
I am proud to say though, that my first attempt was ooh la la yummy. I used the recipe for "Simple Whole Wheat Bread" from All Recipes. I ate so much of it I might be kind of sick now, but that is irrelevant for the time being. The point is: I MADE BREAD. And if I can do it, that really does mean anyone can do it. But I bet you already knew that huh? Sometimes the greatest ideas are the simplest ideas.
For now, one happy and satisfied family = 3 less plastic bags in a landfill (or ocean) somewhere.

yummy! i found a breadmaker at the flea markett this morning for $15 and am making pizza dough as i type. good for you and your beautiful loaves of bread! what kind is the bumpy one and how'd you get it to do that?
Those are rolls. I just used the bread dough, rolled it into balls in fit them into a pie pan. I roll them in a cinnamon first too.
I'm inspired! About as far as I go on a regular basis is pizza dough. But why not bread too! I'm enjoying your blog.
Thank you Karin! Let me know how your bread turns out!
I lost your email, and this is the only way I could think of to get in touch with you. Have Adam email or call me if they want a tour of ABC News. I could show them the World News set if that's at all exciting. Office is right across from Lincoln Center.
