Saving the world 3 loaves of bread at a time

Remember when I said that reducing the plastic in our lives was on my mind?

I have been paying extra careful attention to what comes into our home over the last week, and tallying up our most egregious uses of plastic.

Thus far, I think they are:
  • single serving yogurt containers
  • take out containers
  • plastic bags for bread and tortillas
  • personal care products and peanut butter jars (although these at least are #1 & #2 and recyclable locally)
The next step of course is to figure out how to eliminate or reduce my (our) dependence on these items.

The one that struck me as the easiest, or perhaps most fulfilling, to make a good change over was the bread bags. I am ashamed to say that until today, I had never cooked a loaf of bread from scratch. I know I come off as all overly pious and all, but I am hardly your susie homemaker type.

I am proud to say though, that my first attempt was ooh la la yummy. I used the recipe for "Simple Whole Wheat Bread" from All Recipes. I ate so much of it I might be kind of sick now, but that is irrelevant for the time being. The point is: I MADE BREAD. And if I can do it, that really does mean anyone can do it. But I bet you already knew that huh? Sometimes the greatest ideas are the simplest ideas.

For now, one happy and satisfied family = 3 less plastic bags in a landfill (or ocean) somewhere.

(see how good it is? look at that dog leering the first opportunity he gets)

Those are rolls. I just used the bread dough, rolled it into balls in fit them into a pie pan. I roll them in a cinnamon first too.

I'm inspired! About as far as I go on a regular basis is pizza dough. But why not bread too! I'm enjoying your blog.

I lost your email, and this is the only way I could think of to get in touch with you. Have Adam email or call me if they want a tour of ABC News. I could show them the World News set if that's at all exciting. Office is right across from Lincoln Center.
