Operation Lifesaver: The Gift of Time

I am utterly exhausted today. I have a headache; my neck hurts; my back feels like it has been twisted into some strange geometric pop art sculpture. It doesn't help any that I spilled over half of my expensive fair trade organic coffee that I don't have very much more off left all over the grocery store floor this morning.

Isaiah was looking pretty rough this morning too. I questioned whether he should even GO to school.

However, I really don't care about any of that.

I am still too happy about the wonderful day Isaiah and I spent together yesterday. The fine folks from the Mt. Vernon Fire and Police Departments secured a grant from Operation Lifesaver for us and 19 other parent/child duos to take a train ride to Chicago for a little Science Museum-ing and Train Safety Skill Building.

We had to be at the train station at 3:50 in the a.m. and didn't get back until after 10:00 last night. That translates into about 10 hours on a train and about 8 hours in the city. I loved it!

I haven't gotten to spend that much one on one time with Isaiah in a long time, especially since Desi has been born. (side note: also the first time Des and I spent over 24 hours not seeing each other) Isaiah and I sat together on the train and played, and talked, and tried to sleep, and talked, and played. Not too mention that I LOVE the Museum of Science and Industry and we thoroughly enjoyed visiting the exhibits. The coal mine was my favorite. We have been there twice in the last year and still haven't seen it all.

The train safety stuff was good as well, probably a topic that we don't cover enough with kids.

Isaiah took heed of the advice to be quiet when parents are driving in difficult situations too, as we came upon one on the way home and he stopped talking to me for a second when he sensed I was trying to concentrate on the road.

Thank you Operation Lifesaver.

Now I not only know why not throw rocks at trains, and the exact laws regarding crossing tracks while driving, but I got some of the best stuff possible. One on One time with my first born baby.

If you are bored with your little one today, Operation Lifesaver seems to have a cute little game called Safetyville to play. Maybe you'll learn something together!

My back is messed up today too and I have no idea why. I haven't been to the museum of science and industry in a loooong time. Glad you had a great day!

If you throw a rock at a train it will bounce back at the speed that the train is moving.
